Assay AOfficial or not

Rust's in-game Official tab against everything else

Official servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Data Lab keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.

Hypothesis

The question is simple: how many people are playing Rust right now? The data answers with 95,504 players across 11,825 public servers, refreshed every five minutes. Below that live figure you can compare the last day and the last months, and see how those players divide by game mode, modded or not, group size, gather rate, region and wipe day. A small number of servers hold most of them; the table of the largest samples shows how few. This page measures what public servers report, not what Steam counts.

How the players split

Every server online is counted once in each breakdown, so each one adds up to the 95,504 players on 11,825 servers.

rates, rules and plugins

Oxide runs on 7,486 servers with 57,628 players, Carbon on 1,905 with 17,218. 2,666 servers with 47,690 players call themselves vanilla.

what each server is for

Premium-only servers (296, with 1,922 players) are counted in their mode: premium decides who may join, not how the game plays.

Questions

How many people are playing Rust right now?

The live figure is 95,504 players on 11,825 public servers, updated every five minutes. That number moves through the day, so the last-day chart shows the shape rather than a single reading. The peak today is 98,991.

Why does this differ from Steam's player count?

Steam counts everyone with the game open, including menus and servers that do not list publicly. This page samples public Rust servers only, so it can split the players by server type and region. The gap is usually the hidden and menu time.

When is Rust busiest?

The live data shows a daily peak of 98,991 players, usually in the European evening. Averages over the last week put the busiest hour in UTC, so you can compare it with your own time zone. The quietest hour often has less than half the players of the peak.

Do modded servers hold more players than vanilla?

Modded servers hold more players in total, but they are also more numerous, so the average per server differs. The live split shows both the total and the average. The record so far is 145,095.
